Seneca Casinos Kick Off Native American Heritage Month Festivities

Seneca Resorts & Casinos have some exciting plans in store for this year’s celebrations of Native American Heritage Month. Festivities already kicked off with the annual Community Dinner & Social on November 1, 2023, at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. But there is plenty more to come as the three casinos announced a full schedule of events and attractions taking place this month.

On behalf of the Seneca Nation of Indians, Seneca Resorts & Casinos operates three Class III gaming properties in Western New York. The three locations – Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, and Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino are major economic engines and have provided immense benefit to the people in the region since their opening.

Honouring Native American Heritage Month

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino invites guests to enjoy a special screening of the Lakota Nation vs. United States documentary in the Bear’s Den Showroom on November 10 at 4 p.m. The same day the gaming property will also present the inaugural Indigenous fashion show at 8:00 pm on the casino mezzanine featuring 11 designers and 25 models from Indian Country.

Kevin Nephew, Seneca Gaming Corporation President & CEO said Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate history and tradition which have sustained the tribe’s people across centuries. Ha added that all of that is reflected and expressed in the many events that the corporation has planned to host at its locations throughout November.

On top of the special one-night-only events, the gaming operator will also organize a Seneca Market, which will offer items from Native artisans and crafters, and performances by Haudenosaunee dancers at scheduled times this month. Seneca Market will be hosted in the hotel lobby at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino on November, 3-5, and November 10-12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, Haudenosaunee dancers will perform at the Niagara Falls property on November 3 and 4 and November 10 and 11 at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino will also host them on Saturday, November 4 and Saturday, November 11 at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm; and at Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino on November 9 and 16 at 5:00 p.m.

Time is Running Out

Seneca Nation of Indians’ current gaming compact with the Empire State expires next month and the tribe is yet to negotiate a new one with state officials. New York State Sen. George Borrello, R-57th District has recently highlighted the importance of a new deal and urged Governor Kathy Hochul to meet with the tribe’s President Ricky Armstrong Sr. and find a middle ground.

In the summer of 2023, it seemed that the compact matter could be resolved as the two parties found a tentative agreement. However, after it was revealed that the new contract would allow the Native American Nation to run a casino in Rochester, gaming establishments in the area opposed the plans. This led to no approval of the new deal and the two now have to discuss a new arrangement.
